Happy (two-month) birthday to Elliott!

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Our teeny babe is two months old today… and he’s not so teeny anymore. When he goes in for his check-up on Wednesday, we expect he’ll be approaching 12 lbs, and he’ll be getting his first round of vaccinations like a big boy!

He had a very exciting weekend for his two month birthday: he met several new friends; he looked at things and danced at the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival; and he enjoyed his first Blessing of the Animals service at church. As he’d only ever met one dog before, the service was quite fascinating for him (and he was quite fascinating for many of the dogs too)!

8 weeks old

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Elliott was 8 weeks old on Tuesday the 25th. We had an extremely busy day with our yoga class, lunch with J and baby S and getting Mama ready to go back to work on Wednesday that we barely had time to squeeze in taking Elliott’s picture! We managed, though… just haven’t managed to post the photos in a timely fashion. But, better late than never!

This week, Elliott’s newest trick is that he has added a new cry to his repertoire. Previously we had the hungry cry, the poopy cry and the tired cry. Now, Elliott brings us the bored cry. Yes, that’s right, the You-Need-to-Entertain-Me-Now cry. And so it begins. I suppose I was asking for it saying that newborns aren’t very interesting, eh?

Last days of maternity leave

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Today is my next-to-last day of maternity leave… there have been lots of ups and downs. Taking care of a newborn has been incredibly stressful at times, particularly as I realized after about a month that I didn’t have much to say to keep up my end of an adult conversation that wasn’t about either poo or boobs. All in all, though, motherhood is definitely the coolest thing I’ve ever done. I am constantly amazed at the fact that my body made this little person (with a little help from Dad) and by the wonder that he is bringing into our lives and that will only get bigger as we experience the universe anew.

Sadly, too, I’m going back to work on Wednesday at just the moment when Elliott is starting to get more interesting and to more actively explore and play. I’ll be taking 2 days per week off for a couple of months, which feels like a great balance for me. While I love this kid with everything I’ve got, intellectually challenging, he is not.

7 weeks old

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Elliott turned 7 weeks old yesterday. He’s surpassed 10.5 lbs, and he’s already outgrowing his smaller clothes. Here are his “I’m getting bigger!” photos and some additional cuteness from this week.

6 weeks old

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Elliott is 6 weeks old today, and he gets more interesting every day. Newborns aren’t really all that interesting to begin with, but he’s started to smile on purpose (though they are fleeting and I haven’t been able to get a photo yet), and his neck control is getting better and better.

This past week, he met Mama’s coworkers and was very good through his first worship service at church. We also went on a grand adventure to Peachtree City with S, M and LV that included Elliott’s first dunk in the pool, first concert (the Glenn Miller Orchestra), first night in a hotel and his first trip to the Waffle House.

Right now, Mama and E are paying for the fun with a little cold. It’s much easier on Mom than baby, as she knows how to blow her nose. But E is hanging in there. I think I’m more upset by his congestion than he is.

Take Our Babies To Work Day

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Last week, we took Elliott to Mama’s office. As you can imagine, he improved productivity considerably while we were there. And we put him to work (though he did fall asleep on the job)!

Elliott is 5 weeks old today, and we’re already doing grown up things like meeting vice presidents and having lunch dates.
